A Night at the Village Vanguard is a live album by tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins released on Blue Note Records in 1958. It was recorded at the Village Vanguard in New York City in November 1957 from three sets, two in the evening and one in the afternoon with sidemen. For the afternoon set, Rollins played with Donald Bailey on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums; in the evening they were replaced respectively by Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones.

Sonny Rollins, Volume 2 (Blue Note 81558) was released in early 1957, followed by the pianoless trio date Way Out West (Contemporary/OJC 337), recorded on March 7, 1957. By the time November of 1957 rolled around, Rollins was ready to take his trio concept to the Village Vanguard and record the performances. The recording that resulted documents two shows in the afternoon and evening of November 3, 1957. Rollins employed different bands for the two shows

Sonny Rollins With Elvin Jones & Wilbur Ware - New York, Greenwich Village, Village Vanguard, November 3, 1957 ‎(CD). This is the 2005 mono test pressing of Sonny Rollins' A Night at the Village Vanguard (Blue Note BNLP-1581) from Classic Records. The disk was probably pressed by RTI-known for its high-end audio quality-on 180 gram vinyl. The record is sealed in its original loose wrap.

Sonny Rollins, one of jazz's great tenors, is heard here at his peak with a pair of piano-less trios (either Wilbur Ware or Donald Bailey on bass and Elvin Jones or Pete La Roca on drums) stretching out on particularly creative versions of "Old Devil Moon," "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise," "Sonnymoon for Two," and "A Night in Tunisia," among. Not only did Rollins have a very distinctive sound but his use of time, his sly wit, and his boppish but unpredictable style were completely his own by 1957.

Twenty years after the initial album, a double album containing the rest of the releasable material from this magic night at the Village Vanguard was issued. With the recent re-discovery of the original tapes, the performance has been assembled as it happened and beautifully remastered by original engineer with superb depth of sound. Several of Sonny's stage announcements have been added to master for the first time.

On the album A Night at Birdland Vol. 1, Art Blakey introduced his 1954 cover version with this statement: "At this time we'd like to play a tune was written by the famous Dizzy Gillespie. As drummer of Rollins' trio on the afternoon set at the Village Vanguard on November 3 he became part of the important record A Night at the Village Vanguard (Originally only two of five recorded tracks with La Roca found their way on the album). In 1959 he recorded with Jackie McLean (New Soil) and in a quartet with Tony Scott, Bill Evans and Jimmy Garrison. Walter Theodore "Sonny" Rollins (born September 7, 1930) is an American jazz tenor saxophonist who is widely recognized as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians.
