The sixth album Sonny Rollins recorded as the leader of his own band, Saxophone Colossus features Sonny on saxophone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Max Roach on drums. Featured are Sonny’s best known song St Thomas, two other original compositions and two covers, of which Moritat (better known as Mack The Knife) is probably the best known.

This Sonny Rollins discography is ranked from best to worst, so the top Sonny Rollins albums can be found at the top of the list. Sonny Rollins is a master of the saxophone and one of the last living legends of jazz. With the exception of his "woodshedding hiatus", Rollins has proven to be one of the more prolific bandleaders of modern jazz. If you want to know, "What is the Best Sonny Rollins album of all time?" or "What are the top Sonny Rollins albums?" then this list will answer your questions. Examples of his classic albums on this list: Sonny Side Up, Dig and more. All his studio releases are on here - from the most popular to his worst.

And so to this album, which celebrates Sonny at 80 in concerts in New York and Japan, with a stellar cast of supporting musicians, including even Ornette Coleman. The album is uneven in quality but the good parts, especially Sonny's extended solos, are knockouts. It's disappointing that more sparks weren't struck in the one piece ("Sonnymoon for Two") where Rollins and Coleman play: together. They are both giants and Rollins's playing was clearly influenced by Coleman in the sixties.
