An excellent song by The Cranberries. It is the 9th track of their third album, entitled "To The Faithful Departed", that was released in 1996

Mark David Chapman (born May 10, 1955) is an American criminal who murdered John Lennon, formerly of the Beatles, at the entrance to the Dakota apartment building in New York City on December 8, 1980. He fired five shots at Lennon from a Charter Arms. 38 caliber revolver, hitting him four times in the back. For the next few minutes, Chapman remained at the scene reading J. D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye until he was arrested by police. He planned to cite the novel as his manifesto.

John Winston Ono Lennon MBE (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English singer, songwriter and peace activist who co-founded the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. He and fellow member Paul McCartney formed a much-celebrated songwriting partnership. Along with George Harrison and Ringo Starr, the group achieved worldwide fame during the 1960s

He said: "I Just Shot John Lennon!" What a sad and sorry and sickening sight It was a sad and sorry and sickening night. Oh a sad and sorry and sickening sight It was a sad and sorry and sickening night. I Just Shot John Lennon!" He said, "I Just Shot John Lennon!" What a sad and sorry and sickening sight It was a sad and sorry and sickening night. I was reading a book about John Lennon’s life. I could relate to the fact that when you’re a famous person everybody wants to tell you what you should do and who you should be with. Everybody judges you all of the time. I always thought that people judged his relationship with Yoko a little too much, that obviously the man was in love with the woman, and should have left him alone. John Lennon left behind an indelible legacy of music that evoked a range of emotions. Songs like "Real Love" (with the Beatles), "Jealous Guy" and "Imagine," to name a few, were a testament to his musical genius. On December 8, 1980, Lennon was fatally shot in front of his New York City home by crazed fan Mark David Chapman.

The enduring legacy of John Lennon's best album has overshadowed a glaring historical irony: the Beatles' original architect was also responsible for some of the Fab Four's most erratic solo albums. His recording projects all too often held hostage to polemics both personal and political, Lennon's conflicting artistic sensibilities arguably reached perfect balance just once.

It came as little surprise that John Lennon released the most adventurous, and occasionally confusing, solo records after the Beatles broke up. After all, "Revolution 9" was his idea. Where Paul McCartney used the occasion to indulge his studio fantasies on his debut solo LP, Lennon used his first post-Beatles album as a therapy session, penning confessions about his childhood, mother and neuroses. And when he took a five-year break in the mid '70s, his comeback album was all about his vacation and his new roles as father and faithful husband
