The Missing Piece is the ninth album by British progressive rock band Gentle Giant which was released in 1977. After the Interview tour this return to the studio marked a change of direction for the band with the first side of the album exploring different musical directions than the band was previously known for, including pop music and punk rock, while the second side was more in the vein of their signature progressive rock style. This was the last Gentle Giant album to chart in the United States.

Gentle Giant, who had been plying their unique brand of the genre since the late 60s, felt obliged to adapt their style to suit the current mood, with a view to cracking the American market in the process. With a set of songs that had been refined over the previous year’s live tour, the results of the change in direction were heard on The Missing Piece, released as the bands ninth album, on 16 September 1977. Despite the change towards a more commercial style, The Missing Piece sold poorly on release, while also splitting opinion among the band’s fans. Certainly, the dramatic switch in style of much of the record must have come as something of a shock; yet, taken on its own terms, it proves a consistently excellent work that demonstrates the versatility of Gentle Giant’s songwriting.

The Missing Piece represents the decline of one of the greatest prog bands ever. However, the album isn't as bad as some say. Civilian is worst. I agree with both of you linguist2011 and e210013. The Missing Piece is really the last real good studio album of Gentle Giant. And yes, it seems the band, in the end of the career, sought a state of identity and they never found it anymore.
