Recorded (live) at The Village Vanguard, New York City; June 25, 1961. B3 timing listed @ 3:46 on back jacket and @ 3:41 on label. Evans, LaFaro and Motian seem to be so connected as to be of one mind; as if they know where the others want to go, and the playing seem emanate from them effortlessly. It is highly improvisational but not self-indulgent. Most of all, it is beautiful in its balance and its poise.

Sunday at the Village Vanguard is a live album by jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans and his Trio consisting of Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian. Released in 1961, the album is routinely ranked as one of the best live jazz recordings of all time. Sunday at the Village Vanguard was drawn from material recorded during five sets on June 25, 1961 at the Village Vanguard in New York City

Bill Evans, with virtuoso bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, reinvented the jazz piano trio, creating stunning contrapuntal dialogues that merged luminous lyricism with layers of complex, elusive harmonies, its moments of limpid beauty suddenly giving way to surging rhythms. The trio's finest recorded moments, these performances were captured just 10 days before LaFaro's death in a car accident. The original releases-Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby-are celebrated masterpieces. Instead, you are sitting right there, in front of the Bill Evans Trio playing their New York City gig at the Village Vanguard, and everything is so fantastically clear that I use this album as a standard by which to judge headphones.

Orrin Keepnews, Scott LaFaro, Bill Evans and Paul Motian at the Village Vanguard, 1961. The last set closed with Jade Visions, another Scott LaFaro composition. Describing the experience of listening to this music, Ira Gitler wrote in the liner notes to the original Sunday at The Village Vanguard LP: In listening to the album, I find myself so absorbed that consciousness of my body disappears and I become as one larger ear, equipped only with my psyche. I am not aware of the act of listening.

City's Village Vanguard, Sunday, June 25, 1961. In my article addressing this performance, I wistfully mused: All that remains is the hope that one day Fantasy, Inc. will find the lost sides of that early summer afternoon 40 years ago and release a complete recording as they have done for so many other artists, including Evans. We should honor the quiet genius in these songs. In six short years, Scott LaFaro quietly kicked asses, took names and then threw the list away on July 6, 1961, at the age of 25, less than three weeks after the historic Vanguard date, wrapping his car around a tree on New York State Route 20 between Geneva and Canandaigua. At the time of the Vanguard recordings, Evans was in the middle of a very productive period of his professional life.

I feel I must step in here and defend “The Eclectric Recording Co’s“ reputation and vision. The “Co.” does beautiful, unparalleled, highly detailed work, well beyond what any other specialized vinyl reissuer (if that’s a word) is doing in the industry. They perform and produce at a level that is “fine art”, this isn’t “Wax Time” or some other “bullish!t”. These people have spent, not only a fortune on refurbishing “the right” antique recording and printing equipment, but an immense amount of time working to recreate/replicate each piece they have made available, all in the name of “Authenticity” mind you. Just take a look at their website and you will immediately begin to appreciate the depth and scope of what they are doing (their website is also unparalleled). Now, I am the proud owner of both the “Co’s“ Mono and Stereo versions of this release. I got the Mono out of curiosity, and with a sense of novelty, knowing full well that this album was never recorded in true Mono (two mic Stereo only). To my utter surprise, I found that “Co’s” Mono version wonderfully replicates the original 61’ Mono’s tones and colours, but with a stronger, yet sophisticated and smooth low-end that the original Mono never had. I can also report that the “Co’s” Stereo take stays true to the original 61’ RLP Stereo cut; nice clean detail, with very little (subtle) low-end to speak of (MoFi wins the race on having the “Worlds Finest Vinyl...” Stereo version of “Sunday...”).

total nonsense this Electric Recording label! Printed only 300 copies while having done all this effort to bring the tapes and lacquers from LA to London. Just a joke! Next time just print 1 record so you guys have something valuable

asenseofmuse I agree. I do really want to hear one of these electric company pressings. They also don't press a lot of stuff that is in high demand. They have a couple hank mobley albums and a few other great jazz albums. But mostly classical stuff. I definitely prefer the music matters or analogue productions stuff if I'm not going for the original press. Michael Fremer did a comparison with an audience for their Coltrane release vs the Analog productions KPG reissue and people had different preferences. So its not even guaranteed that you will like these ER reissues better.

For that money you can actually buy the whole discography of Bill Evans from Analogue Productions ( they also obtained the original masters for every single copy and they made an outstanding work).

I'm guessing the high price for this is basically so they can recoup the cost of obtaining the original masters. Still, it is an insane price to pay for a new record, when if you really wanted to spend the money, you would just get a first press.
