Hans von Benda (22 November 1888, in Strasbourg – 13 August 1972, in Berlin) was a German conductor. A direct descendant of the eighteenth-century composer Franz Benda, he operated in the shadow of better-known Teutonic maestri of his generation, notably Wilhelm Furtwängler, Otto Klemperer, and Hans Knappertsbusch.

The Berliner Philharmoniker’s media impact greatly increased through their principal conductor’s active productive activity. Visible sign of the growing fame was the new concert hall: Karajan strongly advocated that it be built. In 1963 the orchestra moved into the Philharmonie on Kemperplatz designed by Hans Scharoun. The building with its new, avantgarde concert hall centred around the stage and thus the music, underscored how the orchestra and the conductor saw themselves artistically

In his day Hans von Bülow, who conducted the premiere of Tristan and was known as a brilliant Beethoven and Brahms interpreter, embodied the modern type of conductor: eccentric in his gestures, uncompromising, analytical in his musical work, expressive in his musical results. Not outwardly attractive but possessed of a consummate elegance – he always conducted wearing white kid gloves – he had a compelling, magical charisma.
