By continuing to broaden their sound, and return to an approach which emphasises composition over endless soloing, Tangerine Dream regained a little momentum after the poor Turn of the Tide. That said, Tyranny of Beauty is, like most of the band's '90s output, tiring to listen to start-to-finish, and is still several leagues below the band's strongest moments.

Jerome's Bride in Cold Tears is another techno-informed piece, whilst Edgar's compositions remain deeply rooted in the more romantic, sentimental sound that has been a part of the band since Le Parc. An arrangement of the famous Largo movement of Handel's Xerxes, although featuring a pleasant counterpoint arranged by Linda Spa, is no less redundant as the Mussorgsky piece from the year before, and closes the original album on a somewhat uninspired note.

Tyranny of Beauty is one of Tangerine Dream's best CDs of the early and mid-'90s. That's not saying a lot. The group's albums from that period - and even back into the late '80s - are relatively weak. And, to be sure, this disc has its weaknesses. However, they are overshadowed by its strengths, and the disc earns high praise. The TD lineup for this CD is Edgar Froese, Linda Spa, and Jerome Froese. Mark Horn and Gerald Gradwohl contribute various guitar performances.

Tyranny of Beauty has some great guitar work by Grohwohl and Jerome Froese, I love listening to this CD, but for whatever reason the tunes just aren't as memorable as those on Turn of the Tides. That being said, it is a great CD and there is some great guitar work. Turn of the Tides and Tyranny of Beauty should be in the collection of any instrumental rock fan or guitar enthusiast. I think the saxophone is more prominent on this CD than the predecessor, but it doesn't detract from the listening experience in my humble opinion. Any of their many albums are worth having; but this album is their best of their early works.
