For Schumann, the sonata was more of an exploratory narrative rather than an architecture - his . An exciting and subtle performance from Glemser.

Clara Schumann was almost as precocious a composer as she was a pianist; her father Friedrich Wieck ensured she received composition lessons alongside her pianistic training, and among her earliest works was a piano concerto, which she began to write at the age of 1. It’s a muscular work, propelled by athletic themes and clearly indebted to Mendelssohn and perhaps Weber too, and with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under Holly Mathieson, it makes a bold start to Isata Kanneh-Mason’s disc devoted to Clara Schumann’s music as a bicentenary tribute Also out this week.

The Brahms Violin Sonata No. 1, Op. 78, was written some years after that, but it seems to hark back to that time, not least in its dedication to Felix Schumann, Robert and Clara Schumann's youngest child. The work is a typical product of Brahms' maturity, with a first movement in which a flow of melody artfully conceals a dense web of motivic connections and intricately calibrated sonata-form balances, all of which Pike bring out very well  . Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) - Sonata for Piano and Violin N. in A minor, O. 05. Clara Schumann (1819 – 1896) - Three Romances for Violin and Piano, O. 2. Performers: Jennifer Pike, violin Tom Poster, piano.

The Three Romances for Oboe and Piano, Op. 94 (German: Drei Romanzen) is a composition by Robert Schumann, his only composition for oboe. It was composed in December 1849. The work consists of three short pieces in A-B-A form, and it was written during what was speculated to be one of Schumann's manic episodes. An average full performance lasts roughly 12 minutes.

The romantic vein of Clara Schumann is expressed with these exuberant pieces: Three Romances Op. 22 composed in 1853 between the second and third sonatas for violin and piano by Robert Schumann and dedicated to Joseph Joachim. They are handled with interesting harmonies and contrasting melodies The First one is a romantic Andante. The Second is an expressive Allegretto. The Third is without doubt the most charming and tender of the whole set. The First Sonata O. 05 has a first movement loaded of tragic tension

Sonata No. 1 in A minor for violin and piano, Op. 105. Mit leidenschaftlichem Ausdruck. Sonata No. 2 in D minor for violin and piano, Op. 121. 4. Ziemlich langsam - Lebhaft. 6. 3. Leise, einfach.

The sonata was dedicated to Robert Schumann, in return for Schumann's dedication of his Fantasie in C major, Opus 17 (published 1839) to Liszt. A copy of the sonata arrived at Schumann's house in May 1854, after he had entered Endenich sanatorium. His wife Clara Schumann did not perform the sonata; according to scholar Alan Walker she found it merely a blind noise. The sonata was published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1854 and first performed on January 27, 1857 in Berlin by Hans von Bülow. It was attacked by Eduard Hanslick who said anyone who has heard it and finds it beautiful.
