Magpie and the Dandelion is the eighth studio album by folk rock group The Avett Brothers, released on October 15, 2013. The album was produced by Rick Rubin who produced their previous two full-length studio albums, 2009's I and Love and You and 2012's The Carpenter. The band first announced they were working on the album in a June 12, 2013 interview and that the songs were all recorded during The Carpenter's recording sessions

As with The Carpenter (also produced by Rick Rubin, and released a mere 13 months ago), Magpie and the Dandelion largely eschews the raw, jittery energy that so often infuses The Avett Brothers' early work. Instead, it's a solemn, ballad-driven album - less mortality-minded than its predecessor, but still seeking poignancy and meaning in lives lived messily.

The Avett Brothers are a Folk-Rock band from Concord, North Carolina. They have released 7 studio albums since their founding in 2000 with Magpie and the Dandelion being their 8th. The band comprises of Scott Avett on banjo, Seth Avett on guitar, Joe Crawford on bass and Joe Kwon on cello. It hasn't even been 11 full months since The Avett Brothers released The Carpenter, the North Carolina band's most recent collection of poignant and infectious, bluegrass-inflected folk-rock.

Magpie and the Dandelion isn’t entirely without energy, pathos, or creativity, but too many edges have been sanded off the Avett Brothers’ music. Magpie opens strong with Open Ended Life, a reflection on commitment that rocks harder than anything else here, holding off the album’s general malaise with some wailing harmonica, rockabilly guitar licks, and hoedown fiddle. Morning Song manages some plaintive irony when every member of the band joins Seth Avett in singing the final, repeating line, I have to find that melody alone. After the folk-rock grooves of Another Is Waiting fade, though, the album becomes unrelentingly sedate, even banal.
