The Mekons are a British-American rock band. Formed in the late 1970s as an art collective, they are one of the longest-running and most prolific of the first-wave British punk rock bands. The Mekons are often described as a post-punk or alt country band.

Me is a studio album by the British-American experimental rock group the Mekons, released on May 19, 1998 on Quarterstick Records. It is noted for featuring greater use of electronic musical instruments than their previous work.

Revenge of the Mekons" can certainly be recommended to any fan of the band. It's understandable that the focus is on the punk roots and the country influence, both of which are core elements of the band's mystique. But it misses giving any insight into the band's best music, which after all is why a band exists, right? Perhaps a sequel - "Mekons Strike Back!" - can be devoted to the in-depth examination of the post-1989 Mekons - the albums listed above - a body of work as strong as any in folk/rock of recent years. The Mekons are the ultimate cult band. They may not have a huge audience, but their hardy host of admirers takes the British-born band and its ade history very seriously. The Mekons emerged as . post-punk's art-school pranksters in the late '70s, and after major shifts in personnel and approach, eventually evolved into a sort of sonic polyglot encompassing folk, country, world music, and more. Throughout their rough-and-tumble career they've maintained a doggedly DIY modus operandi, eschewing complacency and creating more and more fodder for the intensity. Angio: I started listening to them in ’91, I had a friend who made me a tape of Rock ‘n’ Roll and Curse of the Mekons. I just immediately fell in love with them. I’ve been following them ever since.

Notes

a film by Joe Angio. Duration : 95 Minutes.

REVENGE OF THE MEKONS chronicles the unlikely career of the genre-defying collective
notorious for being—as rock critic Greil Marcus notes—“the band that took punk ideology most
seriously.” Born out of the 1977 British punk scene, the Mekons progressed from a group of
socialist art students with no musical skills to the prolific, raucous progeny of Hank Williams. Joe
Angio’s exuberant documentary follows their improbable history – a surprising and influential
embrace of folk and country music; forays into the art world (collaborations with Vito Acconci and
Kathy Acker); and consistent bad luck with major record labels. Among the celebrated fans who
appear on screen to testify to the power of their music and artistic innovations are authors
Jonathan Franzen (The Corrections) and Luc Sante (Low Life), musician/actor Will Oldham, film
director Mary Harron (I SHOT ANDY WARHOL), comedian/ musician Fred Armisen (Portlandia),
and critic Greil Marcus (Mystery Train). REVENGE OF THE MEKONS reveals how, four decades
into an ever-evolving career, punk’s reigning contrarians continue to make bold, unpredictable
music while staying true to the punk ethos.
