Never Let Me Go is a 2005 dystopian science fiction novel by British author Kazuo Ishiguro. Mark Howe Murphy (March 14, 1932 – October 22, 2015) was an American jazz singer based in New York. He was known for his use of vocalese and vocal improvisations with both melody and lyrics. This last album contains Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" with lyrics by Murphy. In 1984 together with Viva Brasil he recorded the album Brazil Song (Cancões do Brasil), which featured original material written by Brazilian songwriters including work by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Milton Nascimento. In 2010 he released the independently produced CD, Never Let Me Go, on which he is supported by pianist Misha Piatigorsky, bassist Danton Boller and drummer Chris Wabich.

The thing about Mark Murphy is once you get used to a song the way he sings it, you'll never be happy with anyone else's version again. I think the reason he isn't wildly popular is that you have to listen to a cd a few times - really listen (vs using it for background music). This album is compelling, and every selection is memorable. And ultimately, I think that is a better standard for determining a 5-star album. I was blown away when after purchasing this album online, discovering that it's Mark Murphy himself on piano. I would listen, and think: "who is this pianist that so very well interprets and phrases Mark's vocals?". Probably the prettiest version (and I've heard many) of "It Never Entered My Mind".
