But if the teaser EP Splitting the Atom is any indication, that Burial remix joint will probably make a better and more convincing Massive Attack album than the next actual Massive Attack album. That's not really a surprise. In the past 18 years, Massive Attack have released only four albums. And the last of those, 2003's 100th Window, was the first album of theirs to fully fade into wallpaper when you weren't paying very close attention. Splitting the Atom has four tracks: two new originals, and two remixes of new songs we've yet to hear. The title track uses the deep mutters of 3D and Daddy G and the angelic, quavery croon of reggae vet and longtime collaborator Horace Andy. The track has all the elements of the group's classic sound: funhouse organs, "Ghost Town" echo-rattles, organ drone, voices that just flutter in the background without ever quite revealing themselves.

Damon Albarn would perform Splitting The Atom with Massive Attack one last time at the Hammersmith Apollo on the 11th February 2010. Outside of these special performances, Splitting The Atom has become a semi permanent fixture at most Massive Attack shows (continuing to do so on the 2014 tour) usually being performed towards the end of the setlist with vocals as they are on the album by 3D, Daddy G and Horace Andy. Splitting the Atom is an EP by Massive Attack. It was released as a download on 4 October 2009, and on vinyl (limited to 1,000 copies worldwide) on 19 October 2009. The EP contains four new songs, two of which are remixes and all of which contain guest vocalists. The title track features guest vocals by Horace Andy and keyboards by Damon Albarn and was premiered on BBC Radio 1 on 25 August 2009. The track is featured on the band's fifth album Heligoland.
