The White Stripes is the debut studio album by American alternative rock duo The White Stripes, released on June 15, 1999. White dedicated the album to deceased blues musician Son House. Johnny Walker of the Soledad Brothers played slide guitar on two songs: "Suzy Lee" and "I Fought Piranhas"

Redirected from The White Stripes (band)). The White Stripes were an American rock duo formed in 1997 in Detroit, Michigan. The group consisted of Jack White (songwriter, vocals, guitar, piano, and mandolin) and Meg White (drums and vocals). After releasing several singles and three albums within the Detroit music scene, The White Stripes rose to prominence in 2002, as part of the garage rock revival scene.

The White Stripes have no bass player, so the popular riff is actually a guitar with an octave effect to sound like a bass. The riff, which sounds a lot like a bass guitar, was created by running Jack's semi-acoustic 1950s style Kay Hollowbody guitar, tuned to open A for slide playing through a DigiTech Whammy pedal, which is set down an octave. In 2001 the White Stripes released their breakthrough album, White Blood Cells. Michel Gondry’s eye-catching video for the single Fell in Love with a Girl received regular airplay on MTV, and the group became media darlings. The duo followed with Elephant (2003), a percussion-driven collection of songs that featured Meg’s debut as a vocalist. Elephant earned a Grammy Award for best alternative music album, and it sold over a million copies on the strength of singles such as Seven Nation Army and The Hardest Button to Button.
