Description

Linda Ronstadt, Stone Poneys and Friends, Vol. III is the third and final studio album by The Stone Poneys, released in April 1968. Singer Linda Ronstadt would release her first solo album the following year. While ostensibly a Stone Poneys album, Vol. III represents a transition and a shift in focus from the first two releases by the band, formed in 1965 as a harmony group with Ronstadt as an occasional soloist, to the singer's solo career

The Stone Poneys is the debut studio album by the Stone Poneys; other than an early single of "So Fine" that was produced by Mike Curb in 1965, this album marks the first official recordings by Linda Ronstadt. Whether intended or not, the front cover photo appears to show the band as a more modern version of Peter, Paul and Mary with several of the songs sung in the same three-part harmony.

The Japanese are really devoted to collecting, and as collectors, must have a "thing" to collect. They haven't gone all-MP3 like the rest of the world and Japan is the only country where Tower Records didn't have to close any stores. The sound is beautifully remastered and the cover is a cardboard "LP Replica" with the original front and back covers. 3" is arguably the weakest of the three Stone Poneys albums if only because the group broke up during the middle of the recording, leaving Linda Ronstadt to finish the project with a host of studio professionals and wannabes. Look closely on the back cover - that's a young Rodney Bingenheimer trying to look cool near the top of the stairs.

III is the third and final album by The Stone Poneys. Linda Ronstadt released her first solo album the following year. The volume number is a reference to this being the third album by the band, though with a Roman numeral rather than the Arabic numeral used on the previous album. III represents a transition between the work of this band and Linda Ronstadt's solo career. Many of the songs are in more of a country rock style that would mark her most popular work in later years, rather than the folk rock music of the first two Stone Poneys albums. This is particularly true of the two songs that were released as singles from this album, "Some of Shelly's Blues" and "Up to My Neck in High Muddy Water"; the latter song reached on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

While ostensibly a Stone Poneys album, Vol. Many of the songs are in more of a country-rock style that would mark her most popular work in later years, rather than the folk-rock music of the first two Stone Poneys albums.

The original recording by The Stone Poneys of "Different Drum" was quite similar to the recorded version by The Greenbriar Boys from their 1966 album Better Late than Never!; but as Kenny Edwards recalls: "That's when Nik Venet sort of took an executive position and went, 'This could be a hit song, and we need to sort of have an arranger arrange.
