Released September 15, 1986. True Stories Tracklist. 1. Love For Sale Lyrics. True Stories was released in 1986 in conjunction with the David Byrne film of the same name. The album features all the songs from the movie as performed by the band, and not as they appear on the film. Later reissues of the album contain a few of these performances, including the version of Papa Legba as performed by gospel legend Pops Staples and Radio Head as performed by singer/songwriter Tito Larriva.
This is neither Talking Heads’ platinum sellout nor their masterpiece. It is the loosest and least complex record they’ve done; David Byrne’s strange-but-true vignettes of suburban eccentricity are given warmth and credibility by the rest of the group. Byrne has never sounded more excited - or less detached. On the rollicking Love for Sale, he declares, I was born in a house with the television always on/Guess I grew up too fast/And I forgot my name, restating the theme of Little Creatures’ Give Me Back My Name in more specific, personal terms. It’s the more ambitious cuts that give True Stories its veracity. The idea of Talking Heads going on a hayride may seem a dodgy proposition, but the country-drenched People Like Us is this LP’s peak. Rather than affect a down-home twang, Byrne sings in his natural tone, and the resulting tension drives the lyric home.

True Stories is the seventh album released by Talking Heads in 1986; it was released at the same time as the David Byrne film of the same name, True Stories. The album does not contain the actors' performances from the film, and as such is not considered a true soundtrack album. Byrne stated in an interview that the decision not to release these unique renditions (including performances byJohn Goodman and Pops Staples) is a major regret.

He created a musical called True Stories and he couldn’t have made a movie with out a soundtrack. Him and his band, The Talking Heads, made an album and soundtrack just as unpredictable and impulsive as Byrne is. It is impossible to classify this album into one or even two genres. The first six tracks have a habit of switching from one genre to a completely different one. The opening track Love For Sale has a very Classic Punk sound to it.
True Stories" may not the Talking Heads best album, but it's definitely full of charm and flavor. This is an unusual album. It's considered a soundtrack to the movie, "True Stories". I do enjoy this strange piece of art. This record signifies the end of the beginning for the band. This album feels much more like a David Byrne album than a Talking Heads album. But the songs on "True Stories" are really good and diverse. Often cited as a weak album but to me, True Stories is Talking Heads at their absolute best. The 1986 film of the same title directed by David Byrne had originally the actors perform the songs and a separate soundtrack album was released to accompany it but the rest of the Talking Heads insisted that they record an album of them playing the songs. What became of it is in my opinion some of the best songs in the group's catalogue.
