Ifield toured the UK in 1963. While Vee-Jay Records temporarily had the US rights to a number of The Beatles' recordings, they released Jolly What! on 26 February 1964.
Francis Edward Ifield OAM (born 30 November 1937, Coundon) is an English-Australian country music singer and guitarist who often incorporated yodelling. After living in Australia, Ifield returned to the United Kingdom in November 1959 where he had four number-one hits on the UK Singles Chart with his cover versions of "I Remember You" (May 1962), "Lovesick Blues" (December), "The Wayward Wind" (March 1963) and "Confessin' That I Love You" (September).

This version, titled The Beatles & Frank Ifield on Stage also listed all four Beatles' tracks on the front cover, but none of the eight contributed by Ifield). Probably less than one hundred copies were pressed, making it one of the rarest Beatles albums.

In October of 1964, nearing the deadline at which Vee-Jay was no longer allowed to sell Beatles records, the label altered the title slightly and came up with a new cover portrait which features the Beatles prominently. This portrait was also used on the Tollie (a division of Vee-Jay) Love Me Do single. This version sold even more poorly but is now extremely difficult to find.
This marketing ploy contains only four, previously released, studio tracks by the Beatles-"Please Please Me," "From Me To You," "Ask Me Why," and "Thank You Girl"-plus recordings by Frank Ifield (remembered for "I'll Remember You").

Jolly What! The Beatles & Frank Ifield album was reissued as new Beatles album with new cover and new name (without Jolly What!) in late Summer, 1964. The reissue cover features the skriking portrait of the Beatles previously used on the Love Me Do picture sleeve. The portrait was derived from the Dezzo Hoffmann color photograph.
