Underground is a 1968 album by American jazz musician Thelonious Monk. It features Monk on piano, Larry Gales on bass, Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, and Ben Riley on drums. The album is widely known for its provocative cover image, which depicts Monk as a fictitious French Resistance fighter in the Second World War. It contains a number of new Monk compositions, some of which appear in recorded form only on this album.

One catch, though: Monk was one of the all-time great jazz composers and this disc includes not one of his masterpieces. But, then again, Monk also was one of the most original interpreters of the jazz cannon, and that's made clear here on such highlights as "Tea for Two" and "Liza"; plus, one gets the chance to savor both the solo genius of the man and one of his best backing bands (tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist John Ore, and drummer Ben Riley).

The album was remastered and reissued in 1989 and 2012 by Original Jazz Classics, and has since received retrospective acclaim from critics, some of whom viewed Griffin's playing as the record's highlight.
