Description

Your Queen Is a Reptile is the third album by British jazz group Sons of Kemet, released in March 2018 on Impulse! Records. Band leader Shabaka Hutchings wrote and plays saxophone on all tracks, Theon Cross plays tuba, and Seb Rochford and Tom Skinner play drums. It also features toaster Congo Natty and performance poet Josh Idehen.

Your Queen is Sons of Kemet’s first release on Impulse!, the label that was home to Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, and Pharoah Sanders at their peaks. This adds another dimension to Hutchings’ relationship with American jazz, placing him among the players whose work he’s trying so hard to subvert and deconstruct. It is a peculiar achievement for him in some ways, but it is also a testament to his talents as a composer and player

My Queen Is Angela Davis" equates, knotty, martial, yet funky rhythms as Cross and Hutchings exchange a contrapuntal lyric line that touches on carnival music and Arabic double-harmonic scales. While "My Queen Is Nanny of the Maroons," titled for the famed Jamaican anti-colonialist, uses a hypnotic Nyabinghi rhythm, the tuba lays down a rocksteady bassline and Hutchings breathes out a gentle modal ballad. Nubya Garcia adds a second saxophone to "My Queen Is Yaa Asantewaa" amid an incantatory Ghanaian-style drumming and declarative tuba.

From another esoteric source, the Sons of Kemet emerged in 2011 and with their debut album Burn (Naim, 2013), and found themselves on several prominent "best of" lists for that year. The Afro-Caribbean influences common in subgenres of jazz are compounded by the UK's various urban melting pots and its multi-lingual musical inspirations. Your Queen Is a Reptile could easily pass for highly danceable modern jazz were in not considered in its political context. In either case, it is rewarding and engaging music. The tuba of Theon Cross takes on multiple brass personalities and the dual percussion of Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford is driving and complex. Hutchings himself is a soulful powerhouse whose tenor can convincingly convey celebration or rage with equal measure. Sons of Kemet-on any of its three albums-is well worth multiple listens.

Their third record, Your Queen is a Reptile, strikes at a point when politics and social movements are on everyone’s lips, and the forces that hothoused jazz in the ‘60s are once again at the forefront of creativity. Strolling between claustrophobic, pleasantly disorienting tunes, to gently swaying melodies and sultry, sun-baked harmonies, Sons of Kemet’s latest release is very much jazz for the 21st Century. It listens more like a book of poetry or short stories than a complete novel.

Your Queen Is a Reptile is Sons of Kemet’s third album. Sons of Kemet’s music reaches vastly across the diaspora, though it has increasingly gravitated toward the Antilles. The band’s 2013 debut, Burn, was a restive, rangy album, stretching from slow deliquescence to scorching surrealism. Its sophomore release, Lest We Forget What We Came Here to Do, pulled toward calypso and soca, toward the earth, toward a more direct energy, thanks to Mr. Hutchings’s growing embrace of his own upbringing - he moved to Barbados at 6 and returned to London in high school - and to the impact of Theon Cross, a prodigious young talent who took over.

My copy is the original pressing. The vinyl has strange staining marks across all 4 sides. The second record has a slight edge warp. There are two non-feelable scuff marks across Side D, but it all plays through perfectly, without any clicks or surface noise.

Doesn't seem to be any definitive comment on whether this EU repress is better than the abysmal first US pressing. Anyone?

My copy purchased Feb. 2019 sounds great. Either they did a new pressing, or I got lucky.

Could you please check if there's a way to separate the 2019 repress from the 2018 press? If it's distinguishable I would like to try and pick it up!
???????????????????????? ????????????????????????
Is there any difference between the first and the second pressing now? Maybe better pressing quality?

My copy is on the way today. I don't have the first version for reference, but I'll listen and report back in the next few days.
Redfury Redfury
My copy is a bit warped but sounds just fine. I guess I'm just lucky.

Repress coming March 2019. My copy is pretty good, requires cranking up the amp a bit though.

Thank you. Where can I get more info about this repress?

I am pretty sure this is United Record Pressing's usual hack job. The download code is redeemable at 'urpressing.com' and the vinyl is very much as awful as anything they do: off-center and dimpled. There is no way they should be entrusted with any release, much less one associated with the venerable Impulse! imprint.

I was about to buy this off Amazon but after reading all of the comments I think I'll give it a miss.

What where they daying Torontoonian? A summary would help us all. Thanks.

Both lp's have pressing defects, gf is dented inside. Another example of lacking quality controls these days. A shame.
Mr.Twister Mr.Twister
My pressing does not have any manufacturing defects, but after reading some reviews of this pressing I decided to do a listening test. I listened to the record and then the same track on Spotify and unfortunately it was immediately evident that you're better off just streaming this record. It's crazy how much better of an album this is than the vinyl would allow you to experience. What a shame.

As soon as I saw the words "Universal Music Distribution" and the FBI warning on the back I knew what this would be like but being a glass half full kind of person and against my better judgement I bought this. Universal In the United States should be ashamed at the poor pressing standards at their pressing plant (I can't imagine there is more than one). Every single person associated with the manufacture of these records should be embarassed at what they churn out. My copy had every single manufacturing flaw you can inflict on a record. Both LPs were warped, scratched, dirty and pock marked like the surface of an asteroid. The labels were torn and off center and the records appeared to have some sort of sandblasted, dull sheen to them. Universal in the US do not know how to manufacture records. Not one LP I have ever bought and manufactured by them has had even a modicum of quality control associated with it. Don't waste your money on this turd of a pressing; it is awful.

Thanks for this clarification. I will never buy another record with UMC on the back of it, same with anything made by United or GZ. I have wasted so much money this year on defective vinyl. But not anymore.

Universal doesn't have a plant. They have their vinyl pressed at either Rainbo or United, I think, although for some reason the telltate 'U' is not in the deadwax on United pressings. I think this is a U pressing. It has all the hallmarks of their work, from dimples to being off-center. Virtually everything Rainbo and United press is off-center or otherwise defective junk.
Road.to sliver Road.to sliver
are the artists not involved in the QC at all? Don't they send test pressings for their approval anymore, or maybe they didn't even ask?
Shistus Shistus
Typical pressing quality for a major conglomerate i.e. fucking shoddy. Creed Taylor would be ashamed, not that Universal Music Group would give a shit about that.Excellent music, abysmally presented. Bit of a shame Sons Of Kemet couldn't have signed this to a less prestigious but more capable, real label.
Nicanagy Nicanagy
quality of record is… there is no quality. Music on its own is great. Lovet it from first drop of jamaican vibe.
Mavegelv Mavegelv
Listened to the free download Wav first and then played the Wax through the same system - really disappointed with the pressing quality, so much is lost! Drums have nowhere near the same impact on the Wax - Doreen Lawrence almost sounds like a different track!

Just got my copy. Budget quality for a premium price. It plays OK but nothing spectacular. I expected a way better sound and overall quality than this. Pity, as this really great music deserves better treatment. Shame on, Universal Music Group!
Frlas Frlas
Possibly figured out why I didn't hear the issues others were having on side C; I have no side C. My copy come with a double sided D.
Zolorn Zolorn
My pressing of the album sounds really good and is quite flat. Though it's true about the runout noise.
anneli anneli
Not too happy with the pressing either. Yeah, there are worse ones out there, but for a premium price I expect an immaculate pressing. The overall noise floor is pretty high, which is especially noticable and annoying on the quieter tracks on the C-side. Plus, the bandwidth comes accross abit crammed at times, not as "wide" as digital version. Will return my copy.A pity, because the music is pure gold and deserves a fine pressing.
Narim Narim
100% right. Just received my copy and I am slightly disappointed with the budget quality for a premium price...
Pettalo Pettalo
A decent, if unspectacular, pressing. Watch out for the ripping/sandpaper noise in each of the locked runout grooves!
Kajishakar Kajishakar
You know, I just got finished listening to side D not half an hour ago, and the very same scratching sound at the run-out startled the Hell out of me. I thought there was a scratch.
