The Game is the eighth studio album by the British rock band Queen. It was released on 30 June 1980 by EMI Records in the UK and by Elektra Records in the US. The Game features a different sound from its predecessor, Jazz (1978). Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "Sail Away Sweet Sister", "Coming Soon" and "Save Me" were recorded from June to July 1979. The remaining songs were recorded between February and May 1980.

Studio album The Game, was Queen’s first to drop in the ‘80’s, smack in the middle of 1980, June 30th. Did it feature a band at the top of their game ? It was a royal flush of sorts, . a mega-platinum winner, especially in America. Queen were the first major rock band to play in Latin American stadiums. Queen would simply claim they played where fans beckoned them for a show. But 1981 was the future in mid-1979, in the studio, where Queen recorded the first four songs to land on The Game, including Crazy Little Thing Called Love. And a few months prior to mid-1979, Queen had cut its Jazz tour short, cutting out its last leg: their homeland.

Queen had long been one of the biggest bands in the world by 1980's The Game, but this album was the first time they made a glossy, unabashed pop album, one that was designed to sound exactly like its time. They might be posed in leather jackets on the cover, but they hardly sound tough or menacing - they rarely rock, at least not in the gonzo fashion that's long been their trademark. Gone are the bombastic orchestras of guitars and with them the charging, relentless rhythms that kept Queen grounded even at their grandest moments.

Sung in Mercury’s most unforced, natural voice, best suited to the openhearted message of this love song, ‘Play The Game’ was later released as a single: the picture sleeve depicts Fred’s famous moustache and ‘clone’ leathers for the first time – these would become trademarks. John’s second song from the album, ‘Need Your Loving Tonight’ (JD plays acoustic guitar) also got a US single release and figure in contemporary tours, when Brian and Roger took the background vocals, although Freddie sings the studio version to perfection. Mercury’s ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ is from the earlier Musicland sessions.
