Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders is a 1958 album by jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, recorded for the Contemporary label, featuring performances by Rollins with Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel, Leroy Vinnegar, and Shelly Manne with Victor Feldman added on one track. It was the last record Rollins produced before a hiatus from recording and performing in public, before his return with The Bridge in 1962.

The last of the classic Sonny Rollins albums prior to his unexpected three-year retirement features the great tenor with pianist Hampton Hawes, guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Shelly Manne (all bandleaders for Contemporary Records during this era) on an unusual but inspired list of standards

This is like being in West Coast jazz heaven, and is a fitting book end to Rollins' 1957 album titled Way Out West. There are a few twists in this one though. While the first West coast album was his debut as a piano-less trio, this one features Hampton Hawes on piano on all but one track, and adds Victor Feldman on vibraphone on track 4 (You). The core ensemble is Rollins backed by Kessell, Hawes, Vinnegar and Manne, so it's like a who's who on that coast. Let the sound samples convey the essence of this album because they do so far better than I can with mere words. The bottom line is this is yet another glimpse into Rollins' ever evolving musical vision, experimentation and evolution. Personally I find that aspect fascinating, and the music superb.
