Stereolab's seventh album, Sound-Dust (August 2001), rose to number 178 on the Billboard 200. The album also featured producers McEntire and O'Rourke. Sound-Dust was more warmly received than Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night. Critic Joshua Klein said that "the emphasis this time sounds less on unfocused experimentation and more on melody. a breezy and welcome return to form for the British band.

As the album opens with the minimal "Black Ants in Sound-Dust," it's evident that the group has restructured and pushed forward, even if it means that they're adhering to their time-honored tradition of expanding their trademark sound with new arrangements and influences.

Sound-Dust is the seventh studio album by English-French avant-pop band Stereolab. It was first released on 28 August 2001 in the United Kingdom by Duophonic Records and on 3 September 2001 in the United States by Elektra Records. The album was recorded with producer Jim O'Rourke and John McEntire from February 2000 to 2001. The track "Nothing to Do with Me" features lyrics derived from sketches by English satirist Chris Morris.

As the legend goes, Stereolab bettlerharfemensch Tim Gane met the devil himself one dark night in the curved corners of Rem Koolhaas' Educatorium at the University of Utrecht, Netherlands. On this night, the devil did not materialize in his traditional red spandex bodysuit, nor did he hold a pitchfork. Instead, he came fat, balding, and wearing nothing but a white stuffed bunny over his groin area. At their time of release, each Stereolab album was touted as "the only one you really need. Sound-Dust stakes claim to this proclamation, but more importantly, proves that Stereolab indeed have two, maybe three albums you really need. If legend and Christian dogma hold true, Gane is burning in hell for this.

Stereolab's next album, 1993's Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements, was their first American release under Elektra, and became an underground hit in both the . In 2002, as they were planning their next album, the band started building a studio north of Bordeaux, France. October saw the release of ABC Music: The Radio 1 Sessions; a compilation of BBC Radio 1 sessions. That year also marked an end to Gane and Sadier's romantic relationship. As the year was coming to a close, tragedy struck.

On their 12th release, art-pop act Stereolab float deeper into the post-rock atmosphere. They still draw from Ennio Morricone and Henry Mancini when creating their own fantasy soundtracks, but Sound-Dust lacks the dynamic interplay that invigorated Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night. The disc is all easy-listening lounge that's almost too gentle on the ears. In the past ten years I have not heard an album as great as this one. At this time, having listened to the band's (near) entire discography, I am prepared to rank this as their greatest accomplishment. Having listened to this album for months now, I am ready to count it as one of the best I have ever heard. An underestimated masterpiece that somehow slipped through the cracks.

Features Song Lyrics for Stereolab's Sound-Dust album.

It took over a year from us delivering the masters to IPR and the eventual IPR release and in the meantime we changed the titles but by then it was too late for IPR to change the artwork.

A set of stamps came with each disk and with the overages a book of stamps was produced.

A 7x7" insert of liner notes and a booklet of 12 "The In Sound" stamps. There is also a sheet of 12 stamps attached to the inside of the gatefold style jacket. Also a 4x4" insert "explanation" of some errors in the release.

A-side plays at 45 RPM.
B-side plays at 33 ⅓ RPM.

Design for the artwork comes from Gary McFarland's 1966 release on Verve (V6-8632), also titled "The In Sound."
