Tragic Figures is the debut studio album by American post-punk band Savage Republic, released in 1982 by Independent Project Records. The reissue version was augmented with the 1982 single "Film Noir" and the 1984 EP Tragic Figure, among other bonus tracks. Savage Republic (originally named Africa Corps) is a Los Angeles based post-punk band formed in the early 1980s. The group reformed in 2002 and remains active with a different lineup. They are known for lengthy songs with an emphasis on percussion and droning guitars. The band was originally named Africa Corps, and was formed by UCLA students Bruce Licher (guitar) and Mark Erskine (drums/percussion). They were joined by Philip Drucker (aka Jackson Del Rey), Robert Loveless, and Jeff Long.

Yet, Savage Republic offer something more profound than their contemporaries across the pond, an impression that begins to reveal itself as Tragic Figures unfolds

The throbbing percussion, though, would continue to be an element in everything they did, and quasi-Middle Eastern melodic motifs begin to assert themselves at times.

There ain't no group like SAVAGE REPUBLIC. And, nobody has the wonderful packaging they do from Bruce Licher's Independent Project Records label. Beautiful, complex cardboard packaging with print right on the cardboard which is often folded and/or cut very elegantly. This is their first album and, to my ears, their finest. There's a couple of great live albums and the second one ain't bad either but this album is definitely them at their musical peak in the studio. A very distinctive percussive, sorta tribal drumming sound.
