Navajo music is music made by Navajos, mostly hailing from the Four Corners region of the Southwestern United States and the territory of the Navajo Nation. While it traditionally takes the shape of ceremonial chants and echoes themes found in Diné Bahaneʼ, contemporary Navajo music includes a wide range of genres, ranging from country music to rock and rap, performed in both English and Navajo.
The recording quality is especially vivid, bringing to life the exquisite resonances of the powwow drums as well as the harmonic interplay going on between various voices. The tracks are confined to branches of the Sioux and Navajo people, and include many different styles of music which have emerged, starting almost immediately with the deliciously grooving Sioux shuffle powwow rhythm and including a touch of the flute solo style that has managed to regain territory originally stolen from the Sioux, at least next to the incense counter.
Music of the Sioux and the Navajo. This 1949 album was recorded by American ethnomusicologist Willard Rhodes (190-1992) with the cooperation of the United States Office of Indian Affairs. The selection from the Sioux community of the Dakotas include a Rabbit Dance and other love songs, a Sun Dance, and an Honoring (or public recognition) Song. The Navajo tribes of the Southwest are highlighted through songs such as a Riding Song, a children's Song of Happiness, a female Spinning Dance, and the distinctive Night Chant, sung in male falsetto. Rhodes provided an introductory essay and track notes.
