The part-time nature of Denny Zeitlin's music career hasn't harmed his pianistic abilities one iota, as this trio date for the discerning Japanese market demonstrates. Beautifully recorded, with world-class support from Buster Williams (bass) and Al Foster (drums), the album is mostly set in the thoughtful, harmonically complex idiom now identified with Bill Evans but with outbreaks of swinging fervor. It is gratifying to find As Long As There’s Music, a work that has that interpretive talent in its essence. Born in Oakland, CA, Wyands went to San Francisco State College and came to New York in 1958, where he worked at Minton’s and many other clubs. It imbues the CD with exuberance in "Stolen Sweets," "As Long As There’s Music," and the gaiety of "Drop Me Off in Harlem," (which has nothing to do with the absence of strife or hard times-there was a lot of gaiety in Harlem during the period this Ellington song was written, as well as despair).

Fix in Music Library. I discovered this album back in 1980 or 1981 and was immediately enthralled. I had already fallen in love with Charlie Haden's bass playing with his performances with Keith Jarrett, Ornette Coleman, and Old and New Dreams. His beautiful approach to the instrument here just cemented my musical infatuation. I had never heard Hampton Hawes' music, but found his piano voice here to be creative and unique. Although these pieces are the height of improvisation, they never lose their melodic and rhythmic sensibility. There is never the moment where the musicians seem to say, "OK, now we are going to take our solos and impress you with our virtuousity. They don't need to: Charlie Haden and Hampton Hawes clearly had mastered the tension between sound and soundlessness.
