Big Wheel and Others is Cass McCombs’ seventh-and-a-half album and the follow-up to 2011’s pair of releases WIT’S END and Humor Risk. Big Wheel and Others comprises twenty-two songs (or, as they are more often and unfortunately known in the After Compact Disc-hereafter ACD era-tracks). But double album implies bloat, prog, and concept, so, let’s stick with songs. Big Wheel and Others is a bundle, a bindle, a hay bale, and an oil barrel of songs.

Big Wheel and Others is the seventh full-length album by American musician Cass McCombs. It was released on October 15, 2013. All tracks written by Cass McCombs, except where noted. Cass McCombs – guitars, vocals. Karen Black – featured artist. Tim Cedar – engineer. arthur Elletson – engineer. Sean Paulson – engineer. Ariel Rechtshaid – engineer. Nicolas Vernhes – engineer.

Cass McCombs’ seventh full-length album, Big Wheel and Others, takes root in this fertile soil of Americana, crafting a sprawling cosmology out of its characters from the past two centuries. When I interviewed McCombs in 2011 around the time of Wit’s End, he confessed a fixation on northern California’s history of drugs, gunslingers, and gold. Where he took this fixation two years later reveals all one needs to know about the wry, reclusive singer-songwriter.

Cass McCombs is just such an artist; he’s recorded pretty indie folk with vocals that sound a little like Elliott Smith (2007’s ‘Dropping the Writ’); he’s provided the clean indie pop tones of 2005’s ‘PREfection’; and he’s taken a turn for the darker on 2011's gothic folk master class 'Wit’s End’. Each time he adopts a new style the resulting music feels totally natural, a talent that shouldn’t be underestimated as many artists have come a cropper attempting similar transitions in their careers.
