Blues-Rock British Blues Regional Blues. Brassy Circular Earnest Gritty Nocturnal Sprawling Weary. Feeling Blue Hanging Out Late Night Night Driving Open Road Other Times & Places Rainy Day Road Trip. The This Is the Blues series from Eagle Records (there are four volumes thus far, of which this is the third) features players from the golden age of classic British blues-rock covering, for the most part, songs by Willie Dixon and John Lee Hooker, all drawn from a series of tribute albums originally produced by Peter.

Although not a "pure blues" album, the playing reflects the richness achieved by using traditional guitar, amp and other sound techniques. What it is is an anthology of new recordings within the "British blues tradition". There are some fine acoustic recordings within the 4 CDs in the series (Big Joe Williams/Maggie Bell and Peter Green and Nigel Watson, for instance and a fantastic solo acoustic rendition of "Don't let me be misunderstood" - see the "British" blues connection?). This CD (and I suspect the other three in the series) is a casualty of the volume wars. The recording of this CD is so compressed it lacks dynamics. What it does NOT lack is a nasty, abrasive edge.

4. Aged and Mellow Blues - Esther Phillips. 5. When the Levee Breaks - Memphis Minnie, Kansas Joe. 3:120:30. 6. When Your Lover Has Gone - Sue Rainey.

This is, for the most part, British Blues Rock: and a damn fine jam of a time with odd pairings of all kinds of great musicians, and for that it’s a stone cold winner. In the 1960s, every good rock band worth their salt jammed out on the blues. Crazy genius Peter Green, for instance, left John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers to form his own band, Fleetwood Mac, whose first three albums are all blues (then was institutionalized for schizophrenia and his perfectly good blues band was ruined with too much estrogen).
