Description

Beautiful, overlooked electronic ambient album by Aki Tsuyuko (from Wasurerogusa) called "Ongakushitsu" released on Moikai (Jim O'Rourke's label) and produced by Nobukazu Takemura (Childisc). Sighing fender rhodes with bleepy, dreamy pads embedded in unique, abstract compositions.

Aki Tsuyuko (アキツユコ) began taking electronic organ lessons when she was a child – one of the images in Hokane is a picture of a young Aki playing organ. I think that everything I have experienced growing up in Japan is somehow an element of my music, she says.

Kyoto's Aki Tsuyuko contributed vocals to some of Nobukazu Takemura's most memorable tracks (including the breathtaking "Kepler" from his album Scope), and while touring with him she has performed on a powerbook, but on this solo recording, Tsuyuko makes music with an array of analog and digital keyboards. Her unhurried compositions focus more on the texture of the sounds than on melody. In keeping with the overall theme of records released on Takemura's Childisc label, Tsuyuko opts for a gentle, restrained approach

Aki Tsuyuko's own music has been made in the shadow of Nobukazu Takemura, her more famous and connected collaborator. Tsuyuko first lent her quintessentially innocent vocals to his Child's View project in 1998, and many of Takemura's subsequent records featured at least one Tsuyuko contribution. Takemura's favored technique during this glitched-out phase was to take her flat, indeterminate coos and feed them into the silicon chipper, combining the skipping utterances with repeating melodic phrases heavily indebted to Steve Reich.

JUST DO IT JUST DO IT
“Empty Talk”, the artist’s first full LP since 2000. This album is sparse and meandering in its playful piano abstraction. At times the songs are somber, others sound lackadaisical. Coming from the this artist, it’s not a surprise, as she does this very well, and with intention. Being a fan of her first LP “Ongakushitsu”, I can say comparatively that the former is more magical, mysterious and dreamy. Where, this lp is colder, more empty room with shawdows and falling leaves outside a living room window.
