Time Was follows his album Earth Grid (April 2011) and his sold out LP-only release Improvisations (Jan 2012). Time Was marks a new stage in the evolution of Zomes. The album marks the first recordings of Zomes as a duo and the first time an album was recorded in a studio and not on a cassette deck. Asa is now joined by Swedish vocalist Hanna. The strength of the collaboration is instantly apparent from the opening notes of the album. Hanna s voice floats freely above Asa s signature organ repetitions. While previous Zomes releases have stuck closely to either long-form improvisations or deep.

Time Was, is an album that puts Zomes at a minor crossroads. While there's obvious potential in the Osborne-Hannah pairing, this ain't some kind of wild, Traveling Wilbury's collaboration, where the weight of expectation met sheer talent and spat out a winning record (at least their first one!). Okay, maybe that's unfair. Luckily for Osborne, his creations are but tiny post-rock experiments that aim for subtlety – not far reaching classic-pop

Time Was is the most recent Zomes disc and offers quite a shift in methodology. Zomes takes a curious cue from beatbox minimalism on the second side opener, Footpaths, which appropriates grungy downtempo hip-hop vibes into an isolated trance of cyclical refrains and gauzy vocals. Equinox presents a weighty holding pattern of delicately-paced organs and Olivegren’s distant coos, as though a locked groove had emerged somewhere amidst Terry Riley’s Persian Surgery Dervishes.
