Sayat Nova is a medieval Armenian poet-ashugh. Sayat Nova, the greatest Armenian troubadour, had a considerable contribution to Armenian poetry and music. Although his whole life passed in a religious society, his works were mostly secular and full of romanticism. Sayat Nova has inspired and even now continues to inspire generations. He became an inspiration for the famous Armenian composer, Alexander Arutiunian, who wrote an opera called Sayat Nova. In 1968, the world-famous Armenian director, Sergei Parajanov directed a film based on the poet’s life, childhood and life as a monk
His real name was Haroutiun Sayak. His real name was Haroutiun Sayakian, but he was better known as Sayat Nova, the King of songs. It was an honour bestowed on him by his nation for his genius. He became popular from his boyhood itself for his exceptional skill with the three stringed violin type of musical instrument known as kemenche (Kamancheh) and his expert interpretation of folk songs.
Sayat-Nova was an 18th century Georgian/Armenian poet, musician and sometime royal court diplomat. He entertained courtiers for a while before falling out of favour and then lived the life of the wandering minstrel (local term – ashik). Later in his life he became an apostolic priest in Armenia which was, at that time, a deeply religious country. His father was called Karapet and may have had Syrian or Turkish roots though this is not certain
The name Sayat-Nova has been given several interpretations. One version reads the name as "Lord of Song" (from Arabic sayyid and Persian nava) or "King of Songs".
Sayat Nova is the greatest Armenian troubadour (ashough) that has ever existed. This great musician and poet is remembered by Armenians as Sayat Nova, the King of Songs, an homage to his stature and prestige. This is a 2 CD set and is the first to feature all of his 31 Armenian songs in one production.

He spent his childhood and adolescence in Tiflis. He learned to read and write in Armenian, Georgian and also learned Arabic alphabet. The song and music have attracted him since he was a kid. Until the age of thirty, Sayat-Nova has improved in ashough art, learned simple and mixed plays. Then has invented his own ones with compatible melodies and performed them during public gatherings. In addition, Armenian composer A. Harutyunyan also made the Sayat-Nova opera, by partially using the songs of Sayat-Nova. He chose or invented melodies for his poems, and then he himself sang and played them.
