The B-52's is the debut album by the Athens, Georgia-based new wave band the B-52's. The kitschy lyrics and mood, and the hook-laden harmonies helped establish a fanbase for the band, who went on to release several chart-topping singles.

The B-52’s came out sounding raw and live because Blackwell wanted to accurately capture their electric sound in the rock clubs, which had won rabid fans with its danceability and maximal minimalism. It got them mentioned in the same breath as post-punk heavyweights Devo and Wire as art-punk on its release. They would later refer to the B-52’s as formative music and style influences, and point to the debut as an example of a great album on a major label, since, in 1991, the ability of a major label to release a good record was actually a subject broached in interviews. Major label or no, it’s still one of the most outright bizarre albums to sell over a million copies.

The B-52’s' self-titled debut album didn’t sound like anything else when it was released, a fact that remains true to this day. The album is like some sort of otherworldly candy: You’re not entirely sure what you’re eating or where it came from, but you definitely find yourself reaching for more. The B-52’s defied convention with their imaginative songs about aliens, dance crazes like the Shu-ga-loo and the Camel Walk, beachy fun with jellyfish, narwhals and rock lobsters, and loving that burns hot like lava and cracks like Krakatoa.

It's difficult to imagine the endless kitschy retro fads of the '80s and '90s without the B-52's pointing the way, but The B-52's isn't simply an historic artifact - it's a hell of a good time.

The B-52s honoured their Athenian past in Deadbeat Club, remembering the time before they were famous, when they either had deadbeat jobs or no jobs – hence the title – and would live the lives of art students. It’s very nostalgic, and it’s about things that really happened. We had a going-away party for our friend Robert Waldrop: a silent party. The most recent B-52s album brought them back to one of their earliest inspirations: the director Federico Fellini. Not only did they adore Nino Rota’s scores for Fellini’s films, they had considered calling themselves Fellini’s Children before settling on the B-52s. We actually wrote to Fellini to see if he would do a video. He politely declined.
