Freddie Spruell is often cited as the first Delta Bluesmen to make a record, although he was born in Louisiana and lived his whole life in Chicago! . Often cited as the first Delta Bluesman to make a record, Freddie Spruell cut his ‘Milk Cow Blues’ c/w ‘Muddy Water Blues’ on June 25th 1926 in Chicago. After a brief career with the Okeh label, ‘Papa Freddie’ or ‘Mr. Freddie’ made several more records in 1935 for Bluebird, but his total output came to only 10 songs. Freddie Spruell was born in rural Louisiana in 1893, but his family relocated to Chicago when he was a child.

Mississippi Blues: Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 2 (1926-1935). This volume gathers the complete known recorded work of Arthur Petties, Freddie Spruell, and Willie "Poor Boy" Lofton, all of whom show the influence of Tommy Johnson, particularly Lofton, whose "Dark Road Blues" is a spirited version of Johnson's "Big Road Blues. Lofton also turns in fine performances on the humorous (but resolute) "It's Killin' Me" and the alcohol-themed "Jake Leg Blues," which refers to the drag leg gait of seriously impaired drunks.

List of Delta blues musicians. a b c d e f Leggett, Steve. Freddie Spruell: Biography". Okeh produced lines of recordings in German, Czech, Polish, Swedish, some were pressed from masters leased from European labels, others were recorded by Okeh in New York. In 1920, Ralph Peers recordings of the African-American blues singer Mamie Smith were a smash hit for Okeh. The company perceived the significant, little-tapped market for blues and jazz by African-American artists, in 1922, Okeh hired Clarence Williams as director of race recordings for Okehs New York studios, in addition to making recordings under his own name.

Freddie Spruell (December 28, 1893 – June 19, 1956) was an American Delta blues guitarist and singer, variously billed as Papa Freddie or Mr. Freddie. He is generally regarded as the first Delta bluesman to be recorded ("Milk Cow Blues", 1926), although Mamie Smith (1920) and Blind Lemon Jefferson (1925) predated him in recording the first blues records. Details of his life are sketchy and sometimes contradictory.

Considering the extreme rarity of the original 78s, condition is generally better than might be hoped, but it must be borne in mind that only one or two copies are known to exist of some titles.
