Joe Lee Wilson, the 65-year-old Oklahoma-born singer, is touring the UK for the second time this year. A burly, bearded figure with the look of a man who enjoys his work, he has a broad-beamed voice that draws on the urbane swing tradition of Billy Eckstine and early blues singing. Once again, he appears here in partnership with Kirk Lightsey, the former Dexter Gordon accompanist, on piano. The key to Wilson and Lightsey's successful liaison is that the pianist reflects the singer's boisterous effervescence, rather than discreetly shadowing his phrasing. There was some attractive abrasiveness and harmonic tension as Lightsey fired off explosive counter-melodies to Wilson's lines, or rocked his stately boat with rollicking chords. Siegel threaded his persuasive tenor lines around Wilson's voice; his playing was buoyant on a mid-tempo Latin feature, tougher in tone on a bluesy swinger that Wilson dedicated to his drummer.
