The album was promoted with a world tour in 1975 that included three shows at Wembley Arena performed as an ice show, the last time it was performed in its entirety until 2016.

Rick Wakeman's third solo album is among his best, as he employs his vast array of keyboards to their full extent, musically describing the characters pertaining to the days of King Arthur's reign. As one of Wakeman's most famous pieces, it is here that his astounding musicianship is laid out for all to hear, a marvelous bisque of keyboard artistry.

His third rock concept album, Wakeman based it on the legend of King Arthur and various figures and events associated with him including Guinevere, Lancelot, and Merlin. He started on the album following his heart attack in July 1974, and recorded it with his five-piece band the English Rock Ensemble, the New World Orchestra, and the English Chamber Choir Tour. Wakeman supported the album with a world tour that lasted from May to December 1975, including concerts performed across the United States and sell out shows in Brazil. The latter leg saw Wakeman perform with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra in shows organised by the Brazilian government and attended by what Wooding estimated as around 500,000 in total.

The making of the album and the subsequent tour have become synonymous in musical history with both blind ambition and folly. At the age of 25, the stress of the rock and roll lifestyle was taking its toll on Wakeman. After he suffered from a heart attack, Wakeman started to write the album during his recovery in hospital. It clearly wasn’t easy. Funded by a PledgeMusic kickstarter fund in February 2016, the King Arthur project quickly achieved its target in a matter of weeks, and was released in June 2016. Whereas before there were seven tracks over 45 minutes, the new version covers 2 CD’s, has twenty tracks (although some of these are the original tracks broken into smaller sections) and lasts a whopping 88 minutes.
