It's been almost three years since Courtney Barnett, the Australian ess singer-songwriter, released her debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. But she never really drifted away from the public consciousness. She toured relentlessly in 2016, put out an upbeat single, then released a daydream of an album with Kurt Vile last year. Courtney Barnett has always been equally cutting, and funny, as a lyricist, her observations about the boredom and banality - but also the love and hope - of life are so direct that they become surreal. Today she announces a new album, Tell Me How You Really Feel, just a year after her breezy collaboration with Kurt Vile, with a video for "Nameless, Faceless. I could eat a bowl of alphabet soup and spit out better words than you," she sings over a bouncy riff, as director Lucy Dyson animates a collage of hot dogs and cherry-topped whip cream (subtle!), letters and Barnett in a serious side-eye.
Courtney Barnett has always stood out for her unique perspective on everyday situations: I much prefer the mundane, she sang way back in 2012. But these days it doesn’t take a songwriter with Barnett’s powers of observation to notice that the daily routine involves, well, a lot of bad shit. On the lead single from Tell Me How You Really Feel, Barnett’s first new solo album since her 2015 breakthrough, she widens her point of view to take on darker aspects of everyday life: male chauvinism, female fears
The night before unleashing her sophomore album, Tell Me How You Really Feel, guitar goddess Courtney Barnett appeared on The Tonight Show. Just as she did back in 2015, the Aussie native knocked out a slaying performance of Nameless, Faceless. When the red and white lights splash her face during the crunching chorus, she looks especially like a rock star. Tell Me How You Really Feel is streaming in full here. Catch Barnett live in the coming months on her extensive tour through North America and Europe
Courtney Barnett Announces Her Angry, Frustrated, And Sad New Album With ‘Nameless, Faceless’. She also talked more broadly about the album as a whole, saying that it’s about letting herself be in touch with her emotions: It’s definitely angry and frustrated and sad, and I was trying to actually feel those feelings, to go through them instead of pushing them away. I was really trying to use songwriting to do some work on myself in that area.
