Differs from Life On Mars, which has green 'holes' in the Philadelphia International Records logo, in addition to unique runout etchings. When I finally had the chance to ask Dexter Wansel about the ideas behind his magnificent album, he said joyfully: "Well Alain, very early on I was into synthesis. And I really didn't understand sinewaves, oscillators, envelope generators, etc. I also didn't understand the the Solar System, or the Universe - (and still don't), but trying to merge the two paths of thinking was very exciting to me. Like on "Rings Of Saturn".

Life on Mars is the 1976 debut studio album by American soul musician, Dexter Wansel. It was released on the Philadelphia International record label. Life On Mars is notable for its diverse incorporation of several musical genres, including: jazz, soul, electronic, funk, downtempo, disco, and fusion. It's name and artwork, along with many of the lyrics and song titles contain themes of sci-fi and outer space (which was exceptionally popular in the 1970s). It is Wansel's most successful album.

Where as the last album dealt with "Life on Mars", this album can be looked upon as "Life on Earth". I'm not sure as to weather or not Dexter Wansel did this on purpose, but the two albums parallel each other in terms of emotional range but differ in its intentions- if there's any type of concept. First light of the Mourning" starts the album off smoothly as the awakening from the dream on Mars.

Science fiction was big in the 1970s. So from a marketing standpoint, it made sense when, in 1976, Dexter Wansel went for a sci-fi theme on his debut album, Life on Mars. Not that the Philadelphia needed a gimmick to get over - if you're good enough to work with heavyweights like the O'Jays, the Stylistics, and the Intruders, you don't need a gimmick. Even without the sci-fi theme, Life on Mars would have been a memorable debut for Wansel, who produced the album and wrote or co-wrote all of the material.

I disagree with the review below. I find it very solid overall, and one of the first space-funk albums. Wansel was no joke.

Interesting Funk/Soul record framed in late 70's Disco stylings. Pretty cool cover to boot, cultural reminder of our shared fascination with Star Wars, Close Encounters and all things "cosmic" & space....Maybe not the complete masterpiece some tout it to be, though; definitely has its moments, but a few tracks leave me decidedly non-plussed
