Dixieland, sometimes referred to as hot jazz or traditional jazz, is a style of jazz based on the music that developed in New Orleans at the start of the 20th century. One of the first uses of the term "Dixieland" with reference to music was in the name of the Original Dixieland Jass Band (which shortly thereafter changed the spelling of its name to "Original Dixieland Jazz Band"). Their 1917 recordings fostered popular awareness of this new style of music.

Lewis began as a man who taught himself an instrument for the pleasure of it, who did play with various bands, but stayed in New Orleans and on the same general technical level of his formative years. For what he wanted to play-parade and dance music with self-taught musicians like himself who also did not aspire to and might not have had the capacity for greater musical had the command of the horn he needed.

Text originally published in 1960 under the same title. One of my greatest regrets was that the great clarinetist of the Dixieland Band, Larry Shields, passed away before making his personal contribution to the book. His lectures and writings on the subject of dixieland jazz, and his continuance in the medium with his own band in the Miami Beach area, are deserving of special recognition.
The album is called: THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND. OK, so the songlist's far from definitive- certain labels go without any representation here. There's also a lot of duplications, meaning re-recordings. For that matter, this is only one of many types of jazz- although Dixieland, in contrast to most others, has its origins in American antiquity. Again, a "first" of sorts. If you like traditional New Orleans music, you'll enjoy this album.
The Original Dixieland Jazz Band was the first jazz ensemble to record and make nationally distributed records. With a mix of European harmonies and rhythms from Africa, jazz entered national US consciousness via this (mostly) white band playing African-American music. This compilation features the widely regarded first jazz single Livery Stable Blues, and is currently the best collection of their early period (1917-1923) and re-union sessions in 1936. John Coltrane – A Love Supreme (UMG, 1964). A Love Supreme is one of the most important records ever made. Perhaps Trane’s pinnacle studio.

Trad jazz – A Dixieland revival began in the United States on the West Coast in the late 1930s as a backlash to the Chicago style, which was close to swing.
