Hänssler Classics should be commended for their series of recordings of Koechlin's music in general, and for this disc combining two of his most imposing orchestral scores: Les Bandar-log and Offrande musicale sur le non de BACH. The former is a 20-minute scherzo taking as its subject matter an episode from Kipling's Jungle Book involving monkeys and music; apparently, if you put enough monkeys in a room long enough, they'll create everything from tonality to atonality to polytonality

Heinz Holliger's crusade on behalf of the music of Charles Koechlin continues with this coupling of what is perhaps his best-known orchestral piece with one of the strangest of his late works. Les Bandar-Log is part of a cycle of symphonic poems based on Kipling's Jungle Book, completed in 1940. It's a 20-minute scherzo that depicts the monkeys Kipling characterises in his book as vain fashion victims.

FOr this recording, conductor Heinz Holliger has incorporated numerous textual corrections made from the original manuscripts. Also included is the somewhat better known tone poem Les Bandar-log Op. 176, the centerpiece of his large orchestral cycle based on Kipling's Jungle Book. This latest entry in hänssler CLASSIC's critically acclaimed Koechlin series presents two of the composer's late works including his expansive tribute to the Cantor of Leipzig, "Offrande musicale sur le nom de Bach Op. 187," which lay unperformed until 1973.
