He studied at the St. Thomas School, and some believe he studied law at the university there, but there is no record of this.

Bach: Virtuoso Harpsichord Music. I expected something better from the sons of Johann Sebastian Bach and most of the pieces were not very inspired or inspiring. The 2 best ones are the Fantasia by Wilhelm Friemann and the Variations on the Folie d'Espagne by Carl Philipp. That is one problem with this CD. The other one is that some of this music is not really for the harpsichord. It is really meant for an early forte-piano. That is clearly the case for the pieces by Johan Christoph Friedrich and Johann Christian.
Bach wrote hundreds of pieces for organ, choir, as well as many other instruments. He spent most of his life as a church organist and a choir director. His music combines profound expression with clever musico-mathematical feats, like fugues and canons in which the same melody is played against itself in various ways. His sons Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, Johann Gottfried Bernhard Bach, Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, Johann Christian Bach, and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach all became accomplished musicians, with . Bach winning the respect of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Although the barriers to women having professional careers were great, all of Bach's daughters most likely sang and possibly played in their father's ensembles. The only one of the Bach daughters to marry, Elisabeth Juliana Friederica, chose as her husband Bach's student Johann Christoph Altnickol.
Johann Sebastian Bach composed over 1,000 pieces of music. Some of his most famous work included the Brandenburg Concertos, The Well-Tempered Clavier, and the Mass in B Minor. Several of his sons, including Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel, and Johann Christian, who was called the English Bach, were also composers. Emanuel Bach and the organist-composer Johann Friedrich Agricola (a pupil of Sebastian’s) wrote an obituary; Mizler added a few closing words and published the result in the journal of his society (1754). There is an English translation of it in The Bach Reader. Though incomplete and inaccurate, the obituary is of very great importance as a firsthand source of information.
