Album · 2003 · 16 Songs. The album is infused with the sleek and slippery grooves patented by his Detroit rap compatriots, especially Slum Village and J. Dilla. Dwele also shows an impressive amount of subtlety and taste in a genre that can often bring out the peacock in male performers. Beyond the masculine greats of R&B, his music is attuned to the hazy soul-jazz of Roy Ayers and the rich productions that Quincy Jones did for the Brothers Johnson in the late '70s.

This song is by Dwele and appears on the album Subject (2003). Like a song from one to anotherI feel so right inside when an ideaComes to me about youAnd I know that you feelThe same when you hear my song for youLike a song to anotherMy love is designed uniquely for youEach word you hear is from my heartAnd that's why you feel this the way you do (I need you). All I ever needed was a subject.

Dwele, first heard on the cool, relaxed chorus of Slum Village's "Tainted," isn't a leather-lunged shouter or, the likely guess, a silky-smooth crooner. Blessed with a fine, sensitive voice, he's a Marvin Gaye disciple, and like his influence, he has his own ideas about production and performance.
