With the enormous success of Halloween and Escape From New York, he found himself working for Universal on his first big studio film. Working with a larger budget at his disposal, Carpenter was able to hire one of his musical idols to score the film. For this new release of music from THE THING, the music has been produced and arranged by Alan Howarth and Larry Hopkins, to include newly recorded renderings of the Morricone music (including recreations of the tracks not used in the film) and Howarth has also provided new performances of the music he produced for the film with John Carpenter, making their premiere appearance.

I was a little skeptical at first since it's a re-recording, but I went ahead and picked up a copy because I had credit at a store. I'm pleasantly surprised! It's really nice to have all the extra electronic queue's which aren't on other pressings, and the symphonic material sounds good. The sleeve design could be better, but all around, I'm really happy with this one.

Me too - I am super curious of everyone's thoughts? I went ahead and ordered a copy and hope that it is stellar. I will post more when I receive it.

Can someone comment on this release, I'm curious why it is only rated as 3 stars. Is it a bad pressing, are the extra tracks throwaway, is it just not gimmicky enough?

The digital orchestrations are not the same of the original soundtrack If you are fond of it you can loose your balls..however takes better tracks after tracks("DESPAIR" IS GREAT like the original ones) ..Alan Howarth electronic compositions are outstanding, the right thing should mix it with the original MCA album....last the quality of print recording is GREAT

I just ordered one directly from their Buysoundtrax website so once I receive it and get to slap it on my audiophile system I will let you know my thoughts. I sure hope it is not a cheesy release with surface noise and warped vinyl.

it's a new recording as it seems...not the orig one...

I'm guessing because they are re-recordings, not the original music. Sadly, I'm finding this out after I ordered it.

Thanks, I think I'll stick with my Waxwork copy then

The copy I got has quite a bit of surface noise.. I'm not sure if it's the same for other folks.

Fans of the film's eerie dark droning "interludes", such as the opening titles sequence followed by the spacecraft hurtling toward Earth, have been waiting decades for the John Carpenter/Alan Howarth portions of the soundtrack to surface. The official Varesse Sarabande (which followed the original US MCA releases) only contained some of the Ennio Morricone score (which includes parts unused in the final film) for this cinematographic masterpiece. This limited edition 2015 "The Thing" soundtrack is a great accompaniement to the Ennio Morricone score which compliments it quite well, although die hard fans of the original film will no doubt realize that both the previously unreleased "score" (pieces on this disc entitled "Main Title", "Burn It", "Fuchs", and "To Mac's Shack") as well as the Ennio score pieces (such as "Despair", "Solitude", "Wait", and "Sterilization" for example) are in fact re-makes/re-interpretations by Alan Howarth and Larry Hopkins. This is very noticeable on the main piece "Main Theme - Desolation", which was entitled "The Thing: Humanity Part 2" on the original Morricone score, which is a good attempt at re-creating the infamous theme, although anyone who has an ear for musical and sound details will in fact notice immediately that the version on this disc is a remake. The same goes for all other pieces on this "expanded soundtrack"; both the Morricine score as well as the aforementionned "interlude" drone moments are modern re-creations by Howarth and Hopkins. However these are very good re-makes and any die-core fanatics of the the film will be able to notice the subtle differences between the film's original audio bits and the versions on disc.In conclusion, this disc is not the final official complete soundtrack score to the film, but is an excellent, if not necessary, accompaniement to the original Morricone score. It does finally allow the fans of the film's never-before released droning moments (originally by John Carpenter and Alan Howarth) a good audio source (even if these are remakes and not the originals) for those bits which have never been officially released for the past 33 years. (note: I was able to find a new/scealed copy off of Amazon at a fraction of the usual asking prices on eBay and other similar sites. However after ordering my copy, the seller mentionned this was his second to last copy)
