The debut album FROM ASHES TO FIRE was mixed by Fredrik Nordström and Henrik Udd at Studio Fredman (At The Gates, In Flames, Hammerfall) and mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (Symphony X, Opeth, Kreator). Needless to say, the production on FROM ASHES TO FIRE is excellent. Saffire are inspired by the 70's and 80's rock and metal bands like Rainbow, Dio, Whitesnake, Van Halen and Black Sabbath. The sound of Saffire can be described as a mix of those bands with a progressive twist, something that makes them stand out in the scene. Victor Olssons intelligent songwriting and impressive guitar playing together with the bands excellent musicianship and the powerful and emotional vocals from Tobias Jansson, Saffire is a dangerous five piece with an exciting future ahead of them.
Saffire is a more than apt name for this Swedish outfit and their freshman album ‘From Ashes to Fire (unfortunately a clichéd title and album cover, the only flaws in my opinion) is one of the best debut albums I’ve heard this year so far. I can only hope that these guys will soon be able to write, record more of this heavenly good music. Tell Us How You Feel.
For the debut album, From Ashes to Fire, Saffire brought in some heavyweight production personnel. Mixing was handled by Fredrik Nordström & Henrik Udd at Studio Fredman and mastering by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios. As you might imagine, there are no issues with the production on this release. From Ashes to Fire opens up with the rocking, groove-filled track Magnolia that feels different than the rest of the album and that may be a good or bad thing depending on your perspective. After Magnolia, Saffire seems to take a decided turn toward paying homage to their influences. In their press release, they cite Rainbow, Dio, Whitesnake, and Van Halen as influences and those are rather easy to pick out, which is my biggest complaint with the album. To me, many of the songs seem overly derivative.
