What a surprise Nigel Olsson's 1978 album on Columbia Records is: Resplendent in Phil Spector flavors and feelings, he even covers the Billy Joel classic written for Ronnie Spector, "Say Goodbye to Hollywood," though without Ronnie's angst. When it's time to say "He won't be my fast gun anymore," Olsson replaces that line with "won't be my mascot anymore" (though the included lyric page has the original Billy Joel idea), and that failure to go over the edge is one of the things that holds the album back somewhat. Paul Davis, at the height.

This 2001 effort featured Nigel covering Building A Bird – a John/Taupin song that had been written for the Made In England album but was never released. Once again, Nigel was welcomed back into the fold of the Elton John Band in early 2000, playing promotional dates for Elton’s The Road To El Dorado soundtrack (on which he sang backing vocals), and making a big comeback on the stage of Madison Square Garden for Elton’s One Night Only concerts. He can also be seen on Elton’s in-concert videos The Red Piano, Elton At 60, and The Million Dollar Piano. In 1971, Olsson produced and released his debut solo album Nigel Olsson's Drum Orchestra and Chorus on Uni Records; featuring Murray and Hookfoot guitarist Caleb Quaye, who had played on John's early albums. Olsson also teamed up with the Liverpool trio, The Big Three, for their reunion album Resurrection (1973). In May 1975, Olsson and Murray were dismissed from John's band following the release of Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, which, upon release, entered the charts at #1.

Nigel Olsson reflects on his lengthy career drumming for Elton John, his side interest in auto racing and whether or not he'll retire. Steve Jennings/WireImage. Olsson has played on many of Elton’s most enduring albums - including Honky Château, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, Too Low For Zero, Songs From the West Coast and many, many others - in addition to more than 2,000 concerts. Was the 18-minute version of Burn Down the Mission on the 17-11-70 live album rehearsed or just totally improvised? That was improvised. That was a jam, basically.
