Colombia has a vibrant collage of talent that touches a full spectrum of rhythms ranging from Pop music and Classical music to Salsa and Rock music. Colombian music is promoted mainly by the support of the largest record labels, independent companies and the Government of Colombia, through the Ministry of Culture. Hip Hop came to Colombia in the late 1980s when a few US Hip-Hop tracks by NWA and MC Hammer spurred a break-dancing fever among the young of the less privileged areas of major cities such as Medellín, Cali and Bogotá. Towards the end of this decade groups began to form, eventually leading to complete album productions in the mid-1990s. La Etnnia and Gotas de Rap were two of the various hip-hop groups that emerged and are widely considered as the pioneers of Colombian Rap.
The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information. After the success of her album Pies Descalzos in 1995, Shakira began working with producer Emilio Estefan Jr. and recorded Dónde Están los Ladrones? which sold millions worldwide.

The album was released without a title and is identified chiefly by the song it carries, its major hit. Hardy had admired Celentano's autobiographical song "Il ragazzo della via Gluck" having seen him perform it at the Sanremo in January 1966 . La casa donde yo crecí". In 1999, the Argentinian girlband Seducidas y abandonadas covered the track in Spanish as "La casa donde yo crecí". It appears on their second album, Las 4 en punto.
The Pacific Lowlands - the coastal regions of Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador - experienced a mingling of African and Hispanic cultures after Spanish conquest in the 16th century. This cultural blending is exemplified in Afro–Hispanic Music from Western Colombia and Ecuador, in which denizens of the tropical Lowlands perform pieces such as the currulao (marimba dance) and arrullo (spiritual). Una de las pistas de Banbuco también aparece como Adios, Berejú en la compilación del CD Raíces Latinas: Smithsonian Folkways Latino.
