The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is an American symphony orchestra based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Baltimore SO has its principal residence at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, where it performs more than 130 concerts a year. In 2005, it began regular performances at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda. Marin Alsop is the Baltimore SO's current music director since 2007, the first female conductor in the post.

The image you see on the left is a scan of the inlay from a CD I found in the Birmingham Central Library: La Marseillaise and other Berlioz favourites, as recorded by David Zinman and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra & Chorus. The CD, which is on the Telarc label, has serial number CD-80164. We struck up the Marseillaise. Almost at once a holy stillness fell upon the seething mass at our feet. After each refrain there was a profound silence. This is not at all what I had expected. On beholding that vast concourse of people I recalled that I had just arranged Rouget de Lisle's song for double chorus and full orchestra, and that where one normally writes 'tenors and basses' I had written instead 'everyone with a voice, a soul and blood in his veins.
