Robert Palmer's third album is a blue-eyed soul disc that sits comfortably alongside Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley and Pressure Drop. This time, Palmer drops the orchestrations that tarted up portions of Pressure Drop in favor of a stripped-down yet stylish sound that shows off his ability to create a romantic, soulful mood. The downside of Some People Can Do What They Like is that it often favors mood over hooks and this leads to music that is listenable yet falls short of being truly compelling: funky mood pieces like "What Can You Bring Me" and "Hard Head" successfully evoke a sultry mood but never take that mood in an interesting melodic direction. Another problem track is "Off the Bone," an effects-drenched instrumental snippet that serves no purpose other than to fill up two minutes of the album's running time.
With the failure of follow-up album Some People Can Do What They Like, however, Palmer decided to move to Nassau, Bahamas, directly across the street from Compass Point Studios. With Palmer bailing on the tour, some critics referred to it as "unprofessional behaviour". In Number One magazine, he hit back at the claims he joined the band for money: "Firstly, I didn't need the money, and secondly the cash wasn't exactly a long time coming. It wasn't exactly an experience that set me up for retirement. He also was accused of ripping off the Power Station sound for his own records. He snapped: "Listen, I gave the Power Station that sound. They took it from me, not the other way around.
Some Peopl. arked a significant step for the Yorkshire-born artist in being the first album he produced himself, taking the baton from Steve Smith. As before, he was ably accompanied by members of Little Feat, and by other such studio notables as Chuck Rainey and Jeff Porcaro. Four Palmer originals made the track listing, two of them solo compositions (the title cut and ‘Keep In Touch’) and others with Alan Powell (‘Gotta Get A Grip On You (Part II)’) and Smith and Phill Brown (‘Off The Bone’). Despite these occasional lapses, Some People Can Do What They Like remains a solid and likable outing with enough memorable moments to please anyone who enjoys blue-eyed soul at its most silky and elegant.
