Description

Album · 2013 · 12 Songs. Y Bardd Anfarwol The Gentle Good.

The Gentle Good is the stage name of Gareth Bonello (born 13 April 1981), a singer-songwriter and folk musician from Cardiff who performs in English and Welsh. The stage name is inspired by Bonello's, with "Gareth" traditionally meaning "Gentle" in Welsh. In addition to his own material, Bonello has had a longstanding partnership with musician Richard James and has also collaborated with other artists as a session musician. In 2014 it won Best Welsh Album at the National Eisteddfod. In 2015 the play Rhith Gân by Wyn Mason, based on Y Bardd Anfarwol, won the Drama Medal at the Montgomeryshire and the Marches National Eisteddfod

Gareth Bonello, aka the Gentle Good, returns with a new album of folky fusion experiments inspired and influenced by a spell in China, writes Robin Denselow. Y Bardd Anfarwol – The Immortal Bard – tells the story (in Welsh) of Li Bai, the eighth-century poet who is still so popular in China that even heavy-metal bands have sung about him. The Gentle Good's approach is very different. This is a pleasantly relaxed fusion work in which Bonello is joined by Chinese musicians and a string quartet, along with flautist Laura J Martin and that fine singer Lisa Jen from 9Bach. There are elements of Chinese folk here, but the best songs are built around relaxed but sturdy Celtic melodies.

The Gentle Good have released several critically acclaimed albums including ‘Tethered for the Storm’ (2011) and ‘Y Bardd Anfarwol’ (The Immortal Bard, 2013) both of which were nominated for the Welsh Music Prize. Y Bardd Anfarwol tells the story of the famous Chinese poet Li Bai and was written during a residency with the Chengdu Associated Theatre of Performing Arts in Southern China. The new album also features fabulous arrangements by Seb Goldfinch, performed beautifully once again by the Mavron Quartet. In May 2016 Gareth began studying for a PhD with the University of South Wales and y Coleg Cymraeg.
