Steve Allen is my most important and enduring influence. Not the comedy, though that was great. It was his social, intellectual and philosophical reasonableness. It was the dozens and dozens of books he wrote. Dumbth", "Steve Allen on the Bible, Religion, and Morality", and "Mark It and Strike It" are among my most highly prized possessions. Steve Allen and the Gentle Players featuring Gabor Szabo and Hal Blaine - Songs for Gentle People (1967).

Subtitled "Far-out and beautiful tracks from California and beyond 1966-1971," Soft Sounds for Gentle People scours the nooks and crannies of the sunshine pop archives to unearth nearly two dozen singles and album cuts long forgotten by all but the most rabid collectors. Most of the tracks are mastered directly from the original vinyl, and while there are some cracks and pops present in the mix, the overall fidelity is excellent and the liner notes are witty and informative - all told, a fantastic package, although its legitimacy is questionable.

Steve Allen’s piano glistens behind Kerouac’s sonorous exclamations on Abraham, Dave Brubeck, and the lovely The Moon Her Majesty. I Had A Slouch Hat Too One Time could be something off a Tom Waits album, lyric-wise, as perhaps could the rest of this LP, come to think of it. At the time, Kerouac was not without his detractors (Truman Capote was certainly not a fan, saying that his work isn’t writing at all-it’s typing. Yet despite such criticism, Jack’s contribution to more modern day literature, and indeed popular culture overall, has been immense.

We won't be selling any Gentle People vinyl here, but we will be selling some other groovy stuff and of course looking for treasure.
