It's not much of either a progression or a slide from the lyrically convoluted, somewhat but not incredibly melodic path he had established with his prior work.

Flat Baroque and Berserk, Harper’s fourth album, is very much a culmination of the acoustic singer-songwriter folk sound of his first three albums. Previous album Folkejokeopus may have hinted at a more progressive direction with a few short experimental pieces, but it’s most ambitious piece was the sprawling Desolation Row-esque Mcgoohan’s Blues, which was more adventurous lyrically than it was musically.

Overall, Flat Baroque and Berserk is one of Roy's first records that really works from start to finish (with the exception of Sophisticated Beggar), and it remains today as glittering as the day it was released. Science Friction's remaster sounds flawless. To me, the twelve songs of Flat, Baroque and Berserk sum up everything I admire about Roy Harper's songwriting and musicianship.
