Pampered Menial was the first album from Pavlov's Dog, a band produced by Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman, the duo behind Blue Oyster Cult. The seven men in this group are revealed in the gatefold holding "Horace," a dog, while three engravings from 1849 by artist Robert Vernon make up the front, back and inside cover. Those paintings are striking, and though the music, mostly written by vocalist David Surkamp, tries hard, it just isn't as captivating as the package which surrounds it.

Pampered Menial was the first album from Pavlov's Dog and was released in 1974. A difficult album to categorise, the songs are melodic and tastefully played and arranged. Elements of Symphonic Prog are present and the occasional more riffy moment. But if you can cope with Surkamp, here's an entire CD of passionate, mellotron-drenched and guitar-driven sympho, which will remind you, at times, of early Crimso, of Jethro Tull at their most autumnal, and even of Genesis' "Mad Man Moon". Hard to believe that even on their debut album Pavlov's Dog sounded so together and reached such peaks - something they'd never achieve again. As early as their second album, there was to be a disastrous falling-off in quality.

Pampered Menial is the debut album by American progressive rock/AOR band Pavlov's Dog, released in 1975. The album features a line-up comprising David Surkamp, Steve Scorfina, Mike Safron, Rick Stockton, David Hamilton, Doug Rayburn and Siegfried Carver (born Richard Nadler). Carver left the band soon after the album was released. It was first released on ABC Records, debuting on the charts in early April.

This version has a circled "Y" price code there instead, and no distribution code. Pavlov's Dog. Pampered Menial ‎(LP, Album, Gat).

The closest these bands got was Leftoverture by Kansas but the album still had some notorious flaws. Probably the only example of an album that blended these different styles in the right way was 1974's Pampered Menial by Pavlov's Dog. Formed in 1972 in St. Louis, Pavlov's Dog is probably the best example of a band that you'll either hate or love, not only because of their pop style in the prog world but mainly because of its vocalist: David Surkamp.

I implore Surkamp deriders to try Natchez Trace. Because even they cannot fail to love this rocker that steams along destroying everything in its wake. I cannot make out the lyrics a lot of the time, because of David's unique, but very much love-or-hate falsetto, but I enjoy what I hear on this album. These guys exist in a space between hard rock, 70s pop-rock, and prog. There's only a little of the latter (song structures, I guess), but they have the guitar chops to dip into the former, and great vocal melodies suggesting the latter. Lots of superb keyboards, piano etc here as well. Recommended to any 70s rock and pop fan, but again: if Surkamp's voice turns you off, skip to Natchez Trace before you stop the album!
