Symphony No. 9 in C major, D 944 "The Great". 1. Andante -. Franz Schubert. Daniel Barenboim, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. 2. Allegro ma non troppo.

The symphony must be considered the major work on the disc even though there are those amongst the collecting fraternity who would describe the Idyll as the most ideal yet recorded. The Schubert belongs to the Viennese tradition familiar to those who know the famous recordings by Krips and the VPO ideally coupled with the Symphony 8, LSO. The complete Schubert symphony recordings by Kertesz and the VPO are also much enjoyed for similar reasons. In this manner was I first introduced to Franz Schubert's greatest orchestral masterpiece - his Symphony No. 9 in C major, nicknamed the "Great" Symphony. Schubert's Ninth Symphony, which lasts nearly one hour, is a masterpiece of gigantic proportions. The composer wrote it near the end of his short life (he was only 30 when he died.

The Philadelphia Orchestra, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is one of the "Big Five" symphony orchestras in the United States and usually considered among the finest in the world. Since 2001, its annual series of concerts have been performed in the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Verizon Hall, near the Academy of Music, its old home of a century since the orchestra was founded in 1900.

Schubert Symphony in C major ("Great"). Schubert Symphony in C major ("Great"). He'll shine in Mendelssohn's innovative Piano Concerto No. Yannick also brings us Haydn's stirring Overture to the opera L'isola disabitata, part of his focus on that composer's music, as well as Schubert's Symphony in C major, his final completed symphony, and absolutely deserving of its less formal title: the Great. 7 is the name given to a four-movement symphony in E major (D 729) drafted by Franz Schubert in August 1821. Although the work (which comprises about 1350 bars) is structurally complete, Schubert only orchestrated the slow introduction and the first 110 bars of the first movement. The rest of the work is, however, continued on 14-stave score pages as a melodic line with occasional basses or counterpoints, giving clues as to changes in orchestral texture.
